From Early Curiosity to Impactful Thinking

As we introduced him to the Wi-Fi Nomads volunteer group, Vijay took us through the early part of his journey. His exposure to the business side of technology in his initial roles turned out to be a quiet advantage. Even as an engineer, he was naturally drawn to understanding the larger picture, connecting technical decisions to business outcomes, a theme that would define much of his career.

His drive to create impact was evident. Filing 35+ patent applications within just three years in the early wireless era is an achievement that speaks for itself.

When Motivation Meets Initiative

We discussed a period in his career when he felt professionally restricted, unable to express his broader interests. That phase led him to start writing blogs, where he broke down his own analysis of all major wireless chipset companies and market trends.

This self-initiated effort not only became an outlet for his curiosity but also played a role in paving his path to Broadcom, where he contributed significantly to how the world experiences Wi-Fi today.

Behind the Shift from “802.11ax” to “Wi-Fi 6”

One of the most engaging moments was when Vijay spoke about the effort behind renaming wireless standards from their IEEE terminology to the simpler “Wi-Fi 6,” “Wi-Fi 5,” etc.

A small change on the surface, but one that transformed how everyday users understand Wi-Fi generations. Hearing the inside story of how such decisions take shape gave us a new appreciation for the layers of thought behind standardization and communication.

Clarity in Communication: A Crucial Skill

Vijay emphasized a point often overlooked: the ability to articulate precisely and concisely. He observed how engineers often overwhelm conversations with too many details, losing sight of what truly needs to be conveyed. Precise communication, he said, is a skill that dramatically improves impact - both personally and organizationally.

Compassionate Leadership

A powerful theme that surfaced repeatedly was compassion, especially from Vijay’s long tenure at Broadcom. He spoke about:

We then moved into the technical landscape. Vijay shared his view on how wireless standards evolve, and how each generation tends to focus on conquering one major pillar at a time:

This simple structure helped us see the evolution of Wi-Fi in a much clearer lens.

When we asked him how discussions inside IEEE groups look, Vijay laughed and admitted he doesn’t have the patience for those long debates - a humorous but honest glimpse into the intense back-and-forth that shapes new technologies.

A Conversation That Ended Too Soon

Before we realized it, the 30 minutes had flown by. Vijay had to rush to his next meeting, but not before leaving us with encouraging words and warm wishes. We ended the session feeling inspired, grateful, and energized for the journey ahead.
